to the track and hear the command. it's time, race fans and here to give the most famous command in motorsports. welcome your racemarshall from cbs' "criminal minds" a.j. cook. >> drivers, start your engines!>> all right. the great roar of the engines here and an unexpected moment of silence before.probably as quiet as you'll hear it for a while in these parts. let's bring in the guyswho will call the race as they always do. the 135th martinsville race. a season alreadyfilled with fantastic finishes. i know you're looking forward to another win. >> no interesting has as much nascar historyas the martinsville speedway. it's windy and cool. bright and sunny here but only about60 degrees, and as jimmie johnson alluded
in the pre-race, one of his big concerns.will his track take on rubber and gain trip. >> he says that's been a big part of whathe hasn't been as successful here at martinsville is how you have to manage the tires, and untilthis track temperature gets up above 85 and 90 degrees. good year has said the rubberwon't lay down so you'll real very to manage your tire wear and use the throttle like there'san egg underneath is so it will cause a lot of half okay until the race gets laid downin this race. >> as we saw here last fall, that's not allthe drivers have to imagine. once a movie. here it's a must, anger management.>> oh, yeah. you have to understand when you start this race. you're going to get bumped.you're going to get shoved and somebody is
going to run in the back of you and cut youoff. got to let it go. got to pick your fights and be sure that in you get into it with somebodyit's worth it because normally it's not. >> done that in rehearsal, would i have puton my osha belt. we'll head for the booth and call 500 laps in one of our absolute favoriterace tracks. >>> it's the nascar sprint cup series at martinsvillespeedway on fs1. on a beautiful, clear, sunny day. let's have a look at the geico startinggrid for today's race. leading off from the front row, joey logano scored his third straightmartinsville pole and penske ford and alongside kasey kahne whose best finish is tent in hishendricks chevrolet and has a runners up finish here at martinsville speedway.>> this is jeff up in the fs1 booth. you got
me?>> yeah, i got you. you look good up on that front row and had a great race car and startedin the outside line and know how important the inside lane is. got to play to get tothe inside and one of the guys, maybe vicers is going to let you in.>> well, i don't know. i hope to either get off turn two and tuck down the backstretch.i know as the race goes the outside gets a little grainy for a lap or two and reallyloose after that depending on where you are out on the track so it's a tough spot to bein once in a while. >> also, you know, it's pretty cool temperatures.i know the sun is out and we know it takes track temp to get the rubber to lay down andhow hard do you push here and how much are
you thinking about conserving the tires onthe long run? >> well, i think definitely early, you know, the first couple of runs, you're probably going to go through them as quick as you willall day long with the cold temps and the track might tighten up a touch after that. yeah.you have to conserve and don't want to lose track position either and that's a long runand if you conserve early you'll be really good the last couple of laps.>> all right, man. cope it up front and have some fun and good luck.>> sounds great, thanks. >> it has not rained here but the track dryersand jet dryers are blowing dust off the corner. it will get to 60 degrees. trying to. tracktemp 85, just a little below the level at
which the goodyear says the track will starttaking rubber. let's get stories from pit rod beginning with mike welch.>> the only pit box to produce multiple winners is pit stall win where joey logano is pittedand his crew chief told me it's definitely an advantage and the time saved on pit roadtoday could be the key to getting a grandfather clock at the end of the race. jamie little?>> denny hamlin has gotten into the habit of winning here at martinsville and he's gotin the habit of getting pit road penalties, bonehead moves and watch for him to back itdown on pit road and we'll see if that helps him get win number six. matt?>> they are carrying two martinsville clocks at day's end. kyle starts seventh on the gridand has a pit stall number 16 which he loves.
go back the past five years, really productivewith two wins and a second and likes the fact that it's level. it will be great for theguys to go over the wall and the timing line placement he says are perfect. larry mack?>> yeah, what makes this track so unique is two different surfaces and asphalt on thestraightaways and the most important part with the concrete corners. i consulted d.w.and jeff gordon. our grip level is a three but as they have been speaking as the rubberbuilds up crew chiefs have to get awfully aggressive and here's the race analysis. 500laps and pit road speeds and 30 miles per hour and the race field 140 to 150 laps andthere's the level again. mike? >> thanks, larry.>> had a little delay there getting the field
rolling as the track sweepers and the jetdry cleaners cleaned the track up. >> the rubber's got to go somewhere, you know.if it's not going to go into the track it will roll up to the top and jeff, bid, youknow when you get out of that groove you get in trouble.>> seen that in practice where that happens and seen that racing in the past and thatrubber just peels off the tires and while it doesn't stick to the racetrack for a while,it does get outside the groove, and you don't want to get a foot or two outside of thator you're going straight in the wall. >> let's have a look at today's ford performancetrack facts. of the original nascar tracks of strictly stock and the sprint cup series, only martinsville remains. 1964,es from lorenzen
got a beautiful ridgeway clack for winningthe race, and it's been a great tradition here ever since. we listened in on joey loganoand team. >> all righty. see what i need here. keepme update on distance behind, the other car behind me and the one behind him and the rovecenter and fight all hard today to get to the bott tom.>> yes, sir. copy that. >> the biggest challenge on the first fewlaps, how do the cars on the outside get to the inside?>> oh, it's such a challenge. that outside lane, not only is it further around. there'sjust something about the grip level and sets the preferred lane and these guys on the outsidehave to be real careful, not just trying to
get into a hole, but if you push too hardon the outside and we talk about tirewear and tire management you can burn the tiresup. >> and the starts and restarts, mike, arecritical. you spend the tires over. you'll lieutenants start and it's a big deal withthe restarts. >> riding over the shoulder of danica patrick, kind of a passenger's eye view from the number 10 chevrolet.>> mike, the tires are cold. got a lot of heat in them and that will make it even easierto spin them on the start of the race. >> and what happens you is actually starton the concrete and then you transition over to the pavement. there's a big change in gripwhen you do that so especially when you're
at such a high gear it will really spin themeasy. >> one more thing about tires the pressuresare real, really low. left side tires, eight, nine, ten pounds of heir in them.>> the anticipation here is very, very high as the pace car is in. we're ready.>> there's no more -- this is the most fan racetrack you'll ever come to watch a raceand to drive a race and to be a part of a race, and we're getting ready to go green.green flag is in the air! boogity, boogity, boogity! let's go racing, boys.>> joey logano shot out of turn two and kasey kahne found a gap that slides in in frontof brian vickers and holds that second spot. now, ryan blaney is the first driver stuckon the outside.
>> made a nice move and picked up a spot ortwo. >> and had his buddy chase elliott, rookiecontenders going at it that maybe could have let him in. no, no, too early for that.>> ryan is 11th on the outside of elliott and matt kenseth right behind and no gap there.>> better get down now because you're going to pay the price if you don't.>> and you'll see brad keselowski will fill that gap in a second.>> they are teammates to some degree. >> he did cut him some slack and blaney wasable to get in lane. >> a little courtesy call right there.>> jimmie johnson. kurt busch loves the outside and loves restart.>> he and kyle are two of the best on restarts.
>> he's super aggressive. and, again, you'vegot to be aggressive, and we've seen how aggressiveness on restarts and going super fast can reallyturn the tires off the cars and got to be real careful and got on the gas right there.looks like he got back to it. yeah, maybe somebody in front and jimmie johnson got inthe back of him. aric almirola slipped a little bit.>> and dale jr. is stuck on the outside here. >> whoa, whoa, whoa!>> around he goes. >> around goes the 88 car.>> hold the brake, hold the brake, hold the brake. swing it around.>> david ragan and him made contact down the middle one-two. that cut his left rear tire.that's exactly what happened.
>> he spun out. normally he wouldn't havelooped that car but that thing went around. >> tailpipe of the 23 on the left rear.>> and earlier one lap before he and aric almirola may have made contact off lap two.>> fighting for 20th here. >> david ragan got the curve a little bitand it cut the left rear tire down instantly. >> down on the corner here.>> he's going to lose laps. >> gets the tire change but he's only a lapdown. >> riding along with kevin half in.>> getting ready to swing it around. >> ragan is trying to stay off of him andhe got on the curb and knocked it right up into him.>> and just like that, you're one lap down.
now in the very first lap of the race dalejr. and kevin harvick got bottled up in it unthree and watch the 88 and four.>> starts with the 17 and one and just a chain reaction. everybody slows down, and it kindof recoils all the way back to dale jr. >> this is why qualifying is so important.when you're back there. that is all it takes. we talk about the domino effect here at martinsvilleand that's the domino effect. everybody is trying to get from the outside lane to insidelane and when it happens five cars ahead of yoere's nothing you can do.>> just like we saw with david ragan, you get on the curve and the car shoots to theoutside and then you cut your tire down. >> exciting start to this martinsville racefor dale earnhardt jr.
>> early cautions here i guess are more thenorm. six in a row where we've had a caution in the first 12 laps of the race.>> just how close you run here. i mean, we talked about contact. you're going to havecontact. normally dale jr. would not have spun out, but because it cut that left reartire down the car looped around all by itself. >> and i just throw some more -- there's somany factors that are playing out now when i see how this is unfolding up here in thebooth is where dale earnhardt jr. is going to be starting this race. he's going to behalf a lap behind the leader where he starts this race and that first lap, yeah, he hasa little bit fresher tires and we know he has a good race car, but with as much that'sgone on already, man, what a way to start.
>> but can you say lucky dog?>> oh, yeah. i have no doubt that he can get back on the lead lap with the speed of thecar. >> three of our next four races includingmartinsville are short track races. >> i love short track races, and i think it'sfun, you know, goes back to what we all started doing, you know, when we were york and wewere all geared up for short track ration and a lot of late model races here in my careerand that's why i've gotten so many laps here that the racetrack and why i feel so comfortable.>> getting ready to restart. completing lap number nine and, again, just as before, joeylogano with kasey kahne alongside brian vickers with pauly in nard and ryan newman, a.j. allmendingerand denny hamlin. here we go.
>> now it's all dinger who has to scratchand claw for a place on the inside line. he's sixth and kyle busch going to give himin room. >> he's in a tough spot right there. thatchain is lined up on the inside and he's going to have a tough time.>> three jgr cars that are on the inside that are all cars that can compete for the win.they won't give him a not. >> matt canseth is not.>> you keep losing time in the turn, one car right after another.>> might be a gap after hamlin. here comes keselowski to/fill it up.>> oh, no. they see you out there. they say sucker, we've got you.>> allmendinger did nothing wrong and came
into turn one on the restart side by sideand just could not find a gap. >> it really has everything to do with thecar that you've got on the side of you and how good does the car cut and low.>> he dove to the inside. >> see how aggressive of a move that was.>> right. see the 316 newman up high and he slipped up into the corner and kyle buschup underneath him and kyle newman lose one, maybe two spots to.>> like losing the draft at daytona or talladega and when you get out of line and don't haveanybody drafting, an even though draft has nothing to do with it, just that inside lineis so, so important and so much farther than the outside.>> i think a.j. was from us trade. a fast
race car. good in qualifying and good in practice.wants to get back up there where he belongs. >> to your point, jeff. we'll have to do anhour special on how nascar's shortest track races just like nascar's longest track.>> yeah. that could take a long, long time to explain all those things but absolutelythere are things that apply to both. >> you get a lot of body damage at daytonaand a lot of body damage here. >> third place, paul menard takes advantageof paul vickers and here calls kyle busch. >> who has to watch out for the 18, he isteammate denny hamlin. jgr sharing information, does that betterthan anybody and kyle busch has confidence from yesterday and never had a win at martinsvillebut looks like he has a $can win today.
>> i like that paint job, 75th anniversarypaint job. that's cool looking. i like old school, mike.>> tough going early on. the only car a lap down in the race. let get a nationwide dalejer performance right. >> when the series moves to short tracks theteams do not use inner liners on the goodyear ration tires but they do move the valve stemto the inside of the wheel to try to help lessen the impact when they make contact withanother car and make knocking that stem off and getting a flat tire. just some of thethings we see when we move to the short track. >> reed sorenson -- yeah, reed sorenson inthe 55 is about a third of a lap ahead of race leader joey logano. earn hard has tohope we have a caution before logano starts
lapping the lower cars. third place, kylebusch on the move. >> he's coming. he was coming so fast kaseykahne moved over and said you go right ahead, young man.>> and i think he knows tire wear is going to be at a premium right now and he checkedup and let paul menard go by him and paul is being really aggressive and is going toget the lead. >> i think joey is going to let him go. thatwill run more than the entire race and tire wear will be at its peak.>> that 27 car, paul menard has been good all weekend. the rcr cars have something reallyspecial here this weekend. >> never gone a lap here. here he goes.>> all good.
>> joey is not going to let that pass happenquite that easy later in the day. >> well, now he has. paul menard has led hisfirst lap at martinsville and taken the lead from joey logano at lap 22. let's get back to 19th place and kevin harvick.jamie? >> kevin harvick fighting just a little bitof a tight car in three and four and just like it was in practice, but the problem ishe's having a little bit of a hard time hearing the spotters. isn't feeling well and theyhave jimmy kitchens on standby just in case he needs to step in so harvick can hit him.>> tim is the former standout of the bush series and spotter and announcer can't dowell without their voice.
>> jimmy kitchens is a longtime spotter andspotted for ryan newman when he drive for stuart hass racing and a lot of spirit therestanding by for tim. >> kyle busch is going by joey logano andlets him go on the outside and we highlighted how important spotters are. talked about mattkenseth and his spotter and the track and all the action and how confined it is andall that goes in. diving underneath you, how important it is to have a spotter that youcan really not just appreciate but that you have a lot of confidence in.>> the spotter has to have experience, too. when the car starts to spin, needs to knowwhether it will go up or down and there's a pattern that these race tracks develop throughoutthe years so the more you spot it, the better
job can you do.>> martin truex moechs up on ryan blaney for 12th place. a lot of side-by-side going onhere. that's casey mears to the outside and the view out the window from danica patrick'scar. >> carl edwards now on the inside of mearsand here comes austin dillon and neither of them qualified really well. denny hamlin hashelped him trying to coach him along. carl has had -- of the four gibbs cars, he's beenthe slowest of the four. >> a car that's on the move is the 2 car.he's made tomorrow some nice moves going around kasey kahne here. the 2 cars looks prettygood. >> and putting a lot of pressure on matt kensethdriving really aggressive here.
>> those two start their trouble the lastrace between these two right here. >> it was keselowski that turned kenseth aroundinto the wall and kenseth retaliated by going after joey logano, keselowski's teammate.>> let's see how keselowski handles this situation. >> well, he's not giving matt more than acouple of inches. i would say chris osborne kenseth's spotter is pretty busy on his wayback to work. >> i'm saying let him go. that's what i'msaying. that's the classic and best way to make a pass here at martinsville. put pressureon somebody and you poke your nose out and you don't have to necessarily dive in thereat the last second. poke your nose out there and if they are willing to give it up outthere in the race they will give it up.
>> the worst information a spotter can giveyou he's looking because he's most of the time there.>> lead tightens up. >> i think menard has worn his tires out andhe got out in front and realizes he needs to conserve. started to grip the rear in thewheel and that hasn't held back kyle busch. >> i think everybody is tire management.>> kyle is going to catch lap traffic in eight or nine laps and dale jr. hopes there's acaution before that happens so he can get back on the lead lap. >>> joey logano in the last seven short trackraces has led over 100 laps. >> he just doesn't have the drive off thathe needs to prohibit other drivers getting
by, especially the first two that passed him, joey and kyle busch. kyle said i don't have near the drive off that the other guys have.>> now, kyle busch is leading this race and he's caught lap traffic. dale jr. no longerthe first car lap down, the fourth car a lap down and can't get the free pass in this position.>> one of the things really smart on kyle busch's part. ran the race and the same tirethat they ran in the truck race yesterday. the knowledge he gained and the informationhe brought from the truck race is why we see him leading the race.>> second place heating up right here. >> i'm starting to see drivers get a straightershot off the corner and it's become a premium and brad keselowski inside paul menard andwill take over second place.
>> the other thing, too, this is no time topanic. we're really, really early into this race and have to get the track revving upa little bit more before you start making changes.>> he's got a good car for the long run and he wasn't kidding.>> yes, exactly. >> brad wasn't too thrilled with it and wentto work overnight and made this car a lot better but i talked to his crew chief paulwolf and was very confident saying we should have won boat of the races and brought aboutthe same exact setup and so far so good. >> kyle busch's lead, two seconds, matt.>> mike, kyle told me before the race information gained on saturday when he competed in thetruck series race you can't measure it, because
he said the first part of the race he learnedso much as far as how aggressive to be on his tires and then to carry that into thesecond half. he says you've got to be a little bit eliot spitzer on your tires and to thattrack starts to take a little bit of rubber. >> here comes newman under joey logano andopening the door for denny hamlin who will make it through. here comes truex and logano was going to slamthe door but he does not. >> he can't.>> he's hung out there and has no choice out there and wanted to and thought about it buthe can't. >> that first long run, if you have a runlike we're having here on tires especially
when the track is green, it's brutal if youdon't have drive off, and you can tell right now joey logano just can't get back to thethrottle to accelerate off the corner. if this continues on, look for him to fall wayback. >> harvick and keselowski have gained themoment spots since the start. >> right here, this 11 car looks really good.getting under ryan newman and 11, all of a sudden, is coming alive.>> g.w., i've not seen him step out the back one time.>> right. >> it's like he's being so gentle on his tiresright now. he's just waiting for all come to him and look at how straight he came upoff that corner.
>> it's kind of interesting the cars thatwere really good in final practice and are showing up on this race.>> guys, this is a third of the way through a fuel run. i think that this is where comersand goers really start to show up. this is where it shows up in you really have a longrun car. >> yeah, i think a lot of things -- a lotof these guys. we heard denny hamlin in the pre-race talk about the feel. the feel sometimestakes 10, 15 laps to get there and then you can start moving forward. everybody else goesbackward and you start to move forward. >> and i think practice conditions here atmartinsville are really, really tricky to get it tuned in, find the balance and griplevels. you see teams run 10, 15, 20 lapse,
and we're already -- here we are at lap 50.nobody made a 50-lap run all weekend long, and you will really start to see how muchthe tires go away. >> kyle busch leading by a second now. whatare we and his team talking about? >> feeling good. drive is good. the turn isgood. that's probably the best turn right now in two right now. >> that's good information. i mean, he's prettyhappy. >> oh, hamlin slipped up.>> didn't expect this. >> turns one and two, jeff, he got off thebottom and slid up the racetrack, and there's always somebody right there to take advantage.>> oh, absolutely. you know, to me he passed
the 31 car of ryan newman and then he gotout in front of him, and i thought he was being conservative, but, i don't know, maybe-- >> what is all that?>> there's definitely some debris there. that won't affect the engine temperature, the watertemperature, but it will certainly affect the breakage right over the top of his leftside. >> don't want to have that.>> that's huge. >> you just cut it in half.>> just starting to talk about some debris. i think we just showed them the debris.>> matt kenseth and paul vickers get by paul menard. vince.>> >> talking with the crew chief jason ratcliffe
and he thought they would qualify better thanninth with what they did, but they felt like they had pretty good race speed and as he'smoved up from ninth now into the third position says it's still a little tight across thecenter and free on exit and definitely moving forward. that's a good sign.>> meanwhile, here's kevin harvick to the inside of ryan newman. this will be for sixthplace and our pole-sitter joey logano is dropping like a rock. he's in free fall. dropped allthe way back to 14th. >> not just him but look who is behind him.the disadvantage of being on the front, he and kasey kahne.>> he and joey logano in trouble. i think we'll have a battle for the lead here shortly.>> kahne has dropped back and said the car
is way too loose and not any reason to doanything crazy with it and just too free to work with it at this stage.>> if you start the race off and the car is really rolling and rotating through the cornerand you get to the gap and it's a little bit loose, you just know every lap that the lapis going to get freer and freer and freer as the tires wear. you manage it because you don't know how longthe run will be. >> don't you think the crew chiefs are thinkingabout halfway on, not the first half of the race because the track is definitely goingto go through big changes. >> we are.>> but we know how crucial track position
is.>> you don't have a choice here, real, but this race is going to change. it will shankgreat a bit >> you don't want to panic. don't want toget land but just don't panic. >> poor old carl edwards. he's going in rightnow and the 18 of kyle busch's teammate has come into turn three and kyle will go a longdown and nobody has worked harder to work with your teammate to try to gather informationand you know your teammates have run extremely well here and it's so frustrating as a driver.what are you doing? i know i've got all my ingredients and the resources. why can't imake it work like them in. >> i like what carl side. denny has been coachingme all weekend. he may not want to admit that,
but he's been trying to help me.>> kasey kahne and joey logano. >> and logano wins the pole and keselowskistarts deep in the field and here were in the first long run of the day and the twopenske cars are just the reverse. >> logano is great and this also goes backto carl edwards and the other drivers at joe gibbs racing, the difference in driving stylesand the way that you set up the cars, a certain look that you and your crew are looking forand obviously brad did a great job working with the team and did a great job gettingthe setup and at least that's the beginning. watch out. i wouldn't be surprised if the22 is back there able to make some adjustments. >> the other car is the hendrick motorsportsteam and one lap down after spinning and drawing
the first caution flag. day. kyle busch, yourleader. >>> 71 laps complete. here's how the coca-colafamily is faring, with ryan newman and denny hamlin in the top ten and paniagua patrickup ten spots and austin dillon up nine and joey logano who started on the pole is nowdown to 22nd. >> kyle busch is going in the corner rightbehind him and only him and two cars between getting lapped.>> he has no grip. he's holding on tight. he ran his fastest lap which was a 19.8 onlap four, but the leader of kyle busch didn't run his fastest lap to lap 14 so that showsyou how the first ten laps are crucial. i think that the 18 was really consevering onthe first part of the run where the 22 took
off and maybe used him up a little bit andall of a sudden it came to the 18 and now he's been able to maintain.>> jimmy johnson running tenth right now. >> got that and if i push any harder, i'mgoing to pay for it. >> 10-4. that's what i need to know. nodeto know what to do to help you. >> that's what's so frustrating.>> joey logano going a lap down to kyle busch. wow, i did not see that coming because hedominated this race the last time we were here. yeah, he wasn't maybe as good as somecars on the long run but he was able to get out front and maintain it for a pretty goodportion of the race? >> vince?>> as you talk about conserving the tires
and taking care of them, joey has been lightingup the tires the entire run and barely gets on the throttle and his spires spin and whyhe went from first to 23rd. >> look at the track surface. the asphaltlooks like a blackboard and the concrete looks like a white board. it's not taking rubberat all. >> you know, the track temperature is justnot there to get the rubber to stick down to the racetrack right now, and it's causinghavoc for these drivers and the grip level that they have, and don't you think thegersand crew chiefs are having trouble figuring that how the. >> here's a rookie running order and chaseelliott one spot there ahead of ryan blaney.
>> not know longer.>> making his second start here at martinsville. qualified on a solid friday and tried to carrythat off into sunday and right now though he's fading and the car has swung to the tightside and he needs much more help, especially on exit.>> compared to the field, he'll put a lot of guys and gals down.>> just pleased with them guys outside. >> yeah, i mean, these guys are -- kyle buschand brad keselowski, they are flying through the field and nobody can do anything aboutit. typically you hold a little bit back and here everybody has worn the rear tires outso bad on this first run they can't do anything to keep the leader behind him.>> 18 is getting off the corner so well. you're
at his mercy and have to let him go.>> guys what, else we may be at the mercy of. get nervous this long of a run and i seethis many race cars and as we talk about cooking that tire feed we could be getting into thatterritory. too much heat. >> man, some of these cars need to come inand get some tires. >> i'm more worried that they will run outof rear tires. >> erik am rolea just slid up and into clintbowyer and neither one of those cars working very well and you saw the outcome from theonboard for a different look. >> the 43 dives in the inside, he's got itchecked up to not run into the one but he just runs wide and body slams the 15. whenthe 15 got up there, there's all kinds of
loose rubber and that gets on the tires andthat caused him for another lap and a half. >> this is not a new tire. not like it wouldbe something different. same thing that they ran here last week. >> will see eight tires better than four, that was one example. >> i was always told if the left side of yourcar is beat up you're in the way and if the right side of your car is beat up, you'repassing people. >> but i think one thing we're overlookingand saw it an phoenix is this aeropackage with the small rear spoiler has made thesecars very hard to set up and drive. and i know that would be contrary to what you mightthink. you're not going very fast. that's
not the point. you're not going fast enoughto generate any real downforce. >> yeah, and i question on the action of thecorner as slow as they are going, but definitely down the straightaway as they get into thecorner and try to carry speed, i would take the rear spoiler.>> don't you agree if you get screwed up going in.>> it messes up the corner. we saw a glimpse hope in the final practice and now look athim passing denny hamlin. >> johnson moving back up. there's biggestmover since the restart, second only to kevin harvick.>> you n.o.w. know what the crew chief, may not be very good but you're better than anybodyelse.
>> and we've talked about kevin harvick. he'squietly worked his way up through the field and he has a really strong race car. sevenand a half seconds behind kyle busch, and this is what you like. if you have a goodcar. there's clint bowyer's car and let's show you his rear. right rear tire down tothe core and there's nothing left and i guarantee he's not alone. a lot dealing with that. ifi was him i'd think about getting to pit road. >> that's what i said. these cars need tiresright now. i would come in and get me four tires. you'll make up a lot of time if you did.>> you wonder why it's on the inside corner and these teams run in the inner tires.>> spin, turn two.
>> michael annett goes around.>> well, that's what you were waiting for. >> clint bowyer is happy about that, i assureyou. had to be his teammate. >> true.>> this saved a lot of people. >> let's see what happened here to bring outsecond caution of the day. >> oh, wow.>> brian scott right behind him. >> yeah.>> you can see all the marbles up there that we can talk about. see if we can get a betterview. >> here comes benard. just gets loose in thecorner. >> and correcting and got up into the leftrear corner of michael annett.
>> annett was running 35th, two laps down.ricky stenhouse will get the free pass and, remember, the unique pit road at martinsville.enter at turn three and exit at turn two. it is one long kind of u-shaped pit road.>> things aren't excited on the racetrack. they will get exciting in pit road. it's anarrow, narrow pit road. >> 30 miles an hour on pit road, so hard todiscipline yourself to hold that speed. >> 18 lead lap cars.>> here they come. jamie. >> kevin harvick started this race 19th andworked his way up to third. car is pretty good. meanwhile, brad keselowski saying heneeds a little bit of help turning but says the rear end of the car stayed with him great.very happy with it. matt?

>> i didn't even goat my lights. i'm not surehow that is possible. i'm not even to my lights. >> the lights on the dash that indicate thatthe rpm that would put him up against the pit road speed limit. however, we saw himside by side with and running quite a bit faster than his penske-aligned car brian blaney.>> yeah, and we've heard these teams talk a lot about the digital dash and, you know, how there's a slight delay, and i'm just wondering, you know, did they not go conservative enoughon those lights that these drivers depend on to maintain that pit road speed?>> this was always the hardest pit road because it's so slow. 30 miles an hour in second gear.you're just lugging along. and we talked about brian vickers during that 82-lap grown flagrun. he didn't start the run like a rocket.
he bided his time and on the long run startedpicking him off and moved up. matt? >> mike, definitely a long run car for the14 and brian vickers today. tried playing a little bit conservative. when they tookthe tires off a number of crew chiefs told me expect possibly as we have a lead changewith the 18 and the 4, busch and harvick. except somewhere with the right front andleft rear on the first run and did see a little bit of that. an air pressure change and he'shaving a pretty solid day. >> kevin harvick did not and busch and againstyet and now menard goes sailing by. >> goes back to the game you get out frontand start running too fast and they are going to play the cat and mouse game.>> and now cat in the picture is the 42 car
and you can see here that we've worn outsideof the tire and that'sber, a little bit too much camber. >> the track is green and agreesive and eventhough the rubber isn't laid down, it should get slightly better throughout the day.>> i think you're right. historically tire wear is an issue for the first couple of stopsand then we don't talk about it much after that. that tire was off brian vickers' car.>> i can tell you who is not conserving tires and speed and that's our leader, kyle busch.he's running almost as fast as he has all day long.>> danica patrick up to 13th place, matt. >> mike, two top tens in her last six trackraces and during that run the car was too
tight in the center and wouldn't cut and itwas ruining her drive off and an air pressure change on that number 10 machine and becauseof her extensive road racing background and places like martinsville where you drive itmuch lyric a short track, as jeff and g.w. can expand on later, she's excelled at placeslike here. >> they get on the brake and off the brake.they get into the corner and release the brake and let the car roll and that's important.>> talk about driving style suiting certain race tracks and we talked about that withkevin harvick at phoenix and talked about jimmie johnson and his driving style suitinghim here. absolutely. this place seems to suit danica patrick's driving style.>> running 13th and is doing a really nice
job.>> third place. >> that car has been good from the get go.>> really aggressive at the beginning. has a short run car but does he wear the reartires out in the early stage of a run. >> a couple of drivers have gone a lap downearly. joey logano's handling went away and what changes have they made there, vince?>> went away in a big way and currently he's a lap down running 20th. just had no grip.made a big air pressure adjustment and a big wedge adjustment and, guys, there was significantwear on the outside of that left rear tire. >> what would be the effect of those adjustments?we'll get back to that. >> i'm sorry. we had a little audio issueup in the booth and neither of my analysts
heard of vince's response. what was the question?>> the air pressure and wedge is what i heard in there, so, you know, basically if you gettoo high on the air pressure, then that's going to take away the grirngs so you reallywant to get the air pressure down and that will keep the long run speed in there, andi think the biggest thing, and this is what the challenge becomes here at martinsville.can you put wedge in and tighten the car up and give it rear drive off the corner butthat's not necessarily going to make the wear of the tire be any better.>> i think if you put a little more air back in the tire you don't wear the edge of thetire out. >> these guys are -- they are playing games, you know. they do one thing and they expect
something else until you kind of get wherethey want in. >> one thing they cannot change is the rearend camber, something that's built into the rear end when it's made.>> guys, it's like walking a tight rope and we saw this in practice yesterday, and, jeff, you pointed out. the most important thing is to have drive off the corner. i think that'swhat todd gordon was trying to really help in the 22 car, and i think they also madea counter adjustment to make sure that they didn't hurt the center, hurt the rotatingthe way the car turned through the middle. tried to keep that and field some forwarddrive. >> that's a really good point, larry. youcan hurt the rear tires even though you're
pushing the front tires because the car doesn'twant to rotate and then they can snap back in around the exit so you want to do somethingto keep the drive off in there and at the same time make sure that the car is stillrolling through the center of the corner. >> and don't ever count anybody out of thisrace at 119 wills, you don't count anybody out.>> not even kyle larson who hasn't had a lot of success here but had really great practicesession here and currently is leading that three-car group in fifth. two spots further up here's kevin harvickin third. jamie? >> rodney childress told me based on the tirewear they saw in practice he dialed the right
front camber out of the tires and after thefirst pit stop they took the tires out and said it looked great. tires were tight, madean air pressure adjustment and started this run but a little too loose.>> the camber is like a knife. if you get it on the inside edge, that thing will cuton the center of the corner like cutting through birth, but if you get too much, you'll geton the edge and keep that bead heated up and blow this edge off the edge of the tire.>> i think some on the crew chiefs are going to think about taking some of the camber outof the rear tire. >> bumper clear.>> now, we restarted about lap 97 or so, so we've been green now for about 25 laps. thetwo drivers that got penalized, denny hamlin
and brad keselowski have gained little ground.they restarted 17th and 18th and they are running 16th and 17th. it's so hard to moveup here. >> but it's not just that, mike. they realizeif they push really hard to make up those spots, all they will do is hurt their tiresand on the long run they will fall all the way back. they are trying to manage trackand tire wear. >> don't want to make it worse. already duga hole. don't make it worse by running over somebody by being aggressive. a long way togo. it's a great car, i'm a great driver. it will come together.>> great battle with kyle larson. >> got caught up high and brian vickers doveto the inside and made that pass.
>> a lot of talk about camber today, larry.>> obviously camber in the front wheel helps the car handle through the corners here atmartinsville. look at the front car. we'll take a look at the rear camber and nascarmandates you can't have more than 3.5 degrees and it's positive. it's leaned out here inthe left rear and negative and leaned in on the right rear and the more camber you canput in the front tires it helps you corner but it helps to wear the edges especiallyon the right rear tire. >> we saw the inside of this right rear tire, the right rear tire that we're looking back and basically looking at the rear bumper ofthis car and this is the right we are of clint bowyer's car and that's where we saw it godown earlier when they were on the long run
and you watch. it won't be long that we'llsee it on the end again. >> our congrats to the number 15 team andthe folks at bsi who mount the on-board cameras and thanks to them for giving us great views.>> fifth place. here comes jimmie johnson on ryan newman. makes the pass. matt?>> jimmie johnson looking for another martinsville clock start at 24th. he worked his way upinto the top ten and the car a little stuck when he tried to get back in the gas checkand adjusted that when a chassis adjustment and see if it's been improved in the longrun. >> you've got to be real careful adjustingthat snugness in the middle. jimmiee is one who likes the car to rotate positive and slowand that can easily get you loose up and nobody
knows better than jimmie johnson what to dohere hat martinsville. >> some fire coming out of the 48 car.>> what's going throne. >> >> kyle busch just about stopped comingdown the front straightaway. >> matt kenseth had just been talking himand closing that gap every single lap for about the last ten laps, close the gap andfinally he close it had so much for kyle and gave up. said, okay, teammate, go on by. youlead this thing. >> i think we're going see that a lot. youknow you're wearing your tires a little too hard. got to let up a little bit.>> so glad mike pereira is here. our fox nfl rules expert and former director of officiatingfor the nfl. big race fan and in the grandstand.
i'd like his ruling on bump and run becauseif you've been watching kurt busch, oh, my goodness, the z brass would be all over himfor bump and run. >> and somebody poked his head into the booththat can tell us about bump and run, tony stewart.>> we've got officials. we've got drivers and got them all.>> matt kenseth after last fall's martinsville mayhem. he is in the lead. >>> pit stops as we're under caution. rickystenhouse went around off the front bumper of ragan.>> the 18 shot to his line and about the time that kenseth came out he shot his line andthey kind of rolled out. let's see what happened
here because it looked like the 20 was a littlebit fast to me. >> a bit of a drag race there, isn't it?>> here comes the 20 and i'm going to go right by you and to the timing line. there.>> now, you asked why can the 20 do that. it's not about the-mile-per-hour that yourun. it's a time segment loop and so what happens is when the 20 stops, the clock isstill running, but he's sitting there stopped so he can just drive all the way out to theexit without speeding. >> well, not technically breaking the speedlimit, but without limiting the amount of time in that segment.>> let's show you what happened down in turn one and rogan smith.>> there's ricky stenhouse.
>> the 17 sort of left the door open and the7 dives down in there and then makes contact. >> you know what that looked like?>> it looked like the 7 thought the 17 was going to let him go and then the 17 decidedhe wasn't going to let him go. >> that's one of those spotty things. whenhe's inside look, looking. you've got to be more specific.>> that's a harder hit. >> he got him right in the most vulnerablepart of the corner where there's just nothing you can do and the impact is going to be prettysevere. >> you can't make a wide entry here. got toget pretty tight in that corner or that's exactly what will happen if you don't.>> joey logue moe got the free pass. he was
battling jamie mcmurray very hard to be inthat free pass position and prevailed. not without a lot of contact.>> oh, yeah. >> watch this. down here in turn three. heslides him up the hill pretty good and right here they get together and that sends oneup the hill. >> he'll be out there.>> and that's jamie fighting back. and he really crowded him in there and didn't wantlogano to get position. look how important that is. the rear bumper of him and number22 and gets underneath him. >> inside the one, and he's there. are youthere inside? >> bam.>> clear. clear, clear.
>> i think -->> if there hadn't been a caution there would have been -->> good-bye one. >> as a guy that's been a lap down a few timesi can certainly appreciate the frustration of these guys battling from that position.dale earn heartjr. is trying to get himself elevated up the scoring lineup so he can startto fight for the free pass and logano and mcmurray went after it hard there, guys. that'ssome good racing. >> that was great racing.>> i'll tell you what that was right there. that was big frustration on jamie mcmurray.man, i was a lap away from getting that lucky dog.>> ricky stenhouse too fast exiting pit road.
>> look at the back of that 22. these carsare on the ground. and a great crowd here in martinsville from our aerial coverage providedby goodyear, superior performing tires to face challenging cans on the track and onthe road. good year, official tire of nascar. >> vince.>> matt kenseth pitted from the lead and said the car was turning a little bit better thanthe first run and still needed helps hon center and bert on exit for matt connectioneth.>> the car started out 40% to 50% tighter than the previous chassis adjustment on the18 to improve it. >> jamie.>> kevin harvick started off a little loose and made a wedge adjustment and once againhis tires that came off looked great.

if it's someone else.>> that was textbook, d.w. kenseth took off and kyle hesitated. didn't bother the wholelineup and whole feel as they got down into turn one and turn two. i know this was a bigthing for the gibbs drivers and last time they were here they sort of cost him betweenthe 20 and the 2 and 22 and seen some wild battling going back on in here from fourthposition between kurt busch and ryan newman. >> all wadded up.>> here comes larson on the inside and jimmy johnson.>> jimmie johnson, like one of the grandfather clocks.>> and kyle busch to the front. >> and i've seen matt kenseth here in thepast and not having a very good car on the

than a bump that he's been in.>> had to use a bumper to get from penalty up to 13th.>> and i think also when you're further back in traffic, look at that. that's really cavedin. that's going to make a big impact on the air flowing through the radiator, and youcan get through and some air is coming underneath the hood and that might be okay. won't reallyaffect the aerodynamics of the car in a place like martinsville and that domino effect whenyou're further back in traffic on a restart. they stack up and you have nowhere to go andyou're running the back of somewhere. it can ruin your day and i don't think that damageis going to ruin his. >> it took a big impact to make a big impact.>> oh, it was a big impact.

to really run with 18 or 20. kept trying, kept trying but never really found t.been really good the last few times and if we cankeep knocking on the top five door that we'll break through and get a win so on to the nextone. >> brad said he'd stick to doing four tiresall over again because that's what they needed. >> first short track race of the season andteammates even at the finish with kyle busch and kenseth and then what we saw throughoutand our guys did a good job in the booth. paul menard and austin dillon saying, okay,we're teammates and what took place on the track we forgot because we're all trying towin and matt yocum caught up with austin. >> old-school run for austin dillon, blisterson his hands, a great run and a lot of people
are going to be talking about teammates, yourselfand the 27. conversations on the radio. you two spoke after the race. how was it?>> it was good. we had fast race cars. i've got to learn to keep my mouth shut on theradio. i'm a fire guy. it was fun today. nice to see a race at short track like that. sometimesyou've got to grow up a little bit. nice to be running up front. thanks to dow, aaa, allthe people that support us. you know, it's fun. i'll talk to paul. me and paul are fun.that's the small part and slugger made a good call and pit crew made a great recovery. brokea jack and were able to recover from that. martinsville, your head is hot and say thingsyou don't want to mean. monday morning i'll talk to everybody and figure it back out.got to thank the good lord above and blessed
us with another great one.>> continue to build on that momentum all year long in 2016. >> there's joe gibbs. michael said, he coachesthe guy with the winner on the phone and calming down matt kenseth a little bit. 0 for 33 nowand it was terrific. two teammates with kyle busch and kenseth, past champions, and theyhad never won here. kyle busch started seventh and never out of the top seven and was ableto pull this off. >> just a dominating performance and getsto celebrate in victory lane with that beautiful clock. austin dillon struggled with his teammateand worked it out at the end. tip your hat to austin. went through a lot emotionallyand came back to finish in the top five. says
he needs to learn how to keep his mouth shot.>> his crew chief will teach him that. >> jimmie johnson was the favorite, ham lip, logano, kyle busch at 7-1 breaks through for victory and let's welcome in the guy upstairsand get some final thoughts. >> two things i love about martinsville andalways have, the casual contact and the gouging for position. when austin dillon gets firedup he gets faster, see it on the stop watch and you never know who you're going to rationfor the win until the last restart. >> absolutely no. boy, i just love short trackracing especially here at martinsville. saw a little bit of everything. tire conservation, gouging, moving people out of the way and pit strategy, tires, no tires there at theend as well as some great, great finishes.
by guys like austin dillon and a.j. allmendinger.kyle busch has done it all. hard to believe he hadn't won here.>> i love what he shade. why did you run yesterday, why did you run saturday's race? because ilearned so much and here particularly it paid off big and you know who coach was talkingto. >> matt kenseth.>> dr. phil. >> yeah, you're right.>> a look at carl edwards. spent almost the whole day a lap down, so if you left tv early, you didn't see carl rebound for a fine sixth place finish. that's determination. again, that's what i love about this place. >> so many impressive finishes and certainlyone of them with sglarl on to texas saturday
night and that's back on fox with a stringof races. fs1 an exciting show, three of the first six overtime races in the nascar seasonand this one a tight finish, and the unofficial result. kyle busch finishing fourth or betterin five of the six races this season. >> and jimmie johnson a hard cat to figureout as was brad keselowski. could charge up but couldn't quite get there.>> paul menard first top ten finish this continue and brian blaney first martinsville race heappeared in and carl edwards seventh or better now in five of six races so far this.>> what about a couple of rookies, elliott and blaney, sicking together, 19th and 20thand trevor bayne in the backup car back in 27th.>> carl edwards part of the joe gibbs racing
team and jamie little spoke with him momentsago. >> carl edwards, talked a lot about him. thefirst half the race and stalled out in the back and then it seemed like you just workedyour butt off to bring it home. >> first half was honestly pretty embarrassing.we just missed it and worked on some things in practice with shouldn't have. my guys donot quit. it's unreal. that's what i'm learning about my team. they make good adjustmentsno matter if i'm 30th or 3rd and my pit crew has great stops. to the grand stands earlyon, embarrassed and saved a little pride for the end and really proud of our recovery.>> carl edwards brings it home sixth. >> david ragan gets into dale earnhardt jr.cutting his tire and was land out.
>> had a fast car and worked and worked andworked and over 300 laps to get back in the lead lap and had a shot at the top five inthe end. >> denny hamlin had to work his way all theway back up to fifth and for a guy -- he blamed himself, i guess for a rookie mistake andwheel hopping and wrecking here. [4:52:29 pm] >> he made up all that ground and had thefastest car on the track and another mistake on pit road for harvick. heard him say wecan't keep doing that. left side didn't get up in time and they lost some critical timeon the track. >> chris osborne and the spotter for mattkenseth this season, and matt certainly had
a good run in here as he had a chance to winthis, and you even said maybe one of the fastest cars here as you see on the restart. mattled 45 laps and with 11 to go inside the 12 kyle busch made that decision with his teammateon the restart and pulled into victory lane. >> but he was being heated up by a.j. allmendinger.nobody can drive further and in the middle of that race he was doing everything he couldand he came up a bit short. >> brian vickers in that 14 car for tony stewartwound up seventh and matt yocum caught up with him.>> impressive day with brian vicious and the 14 team and best finish with the team thisyear. did you get out-tired there near the end?>> a little bit. pleased but not satisfied.
we had such a good car yesterday, so fast.i don't know if the track changed. tire change not quite as good as practice but proud ofthe guys' effort. we wanted to win this race and for arnie's army and everybody this isa bitter suite track, lost my best friend. 7 was ricky's number so we'll take a 7 tomove hofnlt the team is getting strong every week and really proud of those guys and goingto be a strong team this year. >> this is a place where 18 hall of famershave won and whatever good you do you can carry it a long way.>> the race started out. third straight martinsville pole with kasey kahne and neither one of themthreatened at end. >> talk about how have to start up front andyou need a good handling car. early on logano's
car went away and casey kaib never could getahold of his track and those guys struggled and you can also fight from the back. saw junior do that and carl all the way upto sixth and you can real, but it's better to start -- makes your day much less eventisrael. >> joey logano started on the pole for thethird consecutive time at martinsville and just seemed like something went away earlyin the race, joey. what was it? >> the right rear tire. that's what that was.gosh, such a different race. the race played out a little different that be we would andthe way the tires were completely opposite of what it was in the past. got some homeworkto do to understand why that happened. something
that was seen all the way up and down withthe pit road with the nuts not wearing like they usually do. interesting for all of usto see and go back and understand why that happened hand how to make our car fast likethat. figured ow ways to crutch our car and get better, so we know where we missed it,but we didn't have the right tools during the race to fix it. points that we were maybesearch the or eighth place car and just didn't get everything we needed to the at the endthere. >> at the end, i don't know what it was, thebumper that flipped up on the hood, could you even see?>> no, pretty much blindfolded. i relied on my spotter to tell me where cars were in frontof me so i didn't run over somebody and we
were lucky to be able to limp it home afterthat, you know. maybe we could have finished a couple spots better but that doesn't happenbut that weak the difference today, that's for sure.>> thanks, joey. >> you can hear the disappointment in thevoice of joey logano. for kyle busch at age 30, the reigning sprint cup champ, think aboutthat he missed this race last year recovering from that injury, obviously had his son whowas born in the last year and here's a guy who has struggled at this place and at theend in terms of having decisions to make he ended making the right one.>> hand his team did, too. you've got to figure 500 laps, the track not taking rubber anddid it much different than the crew and team
thought. joey logano said that. team had to be justright on the gas, changing the wet settings all day long to stay on top of it or it couldhave gotten away in a hurry. >> the crew chief adams there to help himout. let's go to our crew chief and larry mcreynolds.>> to me, chris and michael, that's what impressed me with kyle busch, led 318 laps and kylebusch knew when ketch harvick drove by him at the halfway point of the race his car wasnot turning as good in the corner. told adam stevens that and adam stevens made an adjustmentand if you have that dominant of a car, pretty aggressive and risky when you make a changebut that's what they needed to do to win this
race.>> thanks very much, larry. said before how difficult, two rookies in the history of now135 races have won here, ryan blaney and chase elliott gave it their best shot and let'scheck in with jamie little who is with brian blainy.>> a lot of talk about the rookies. how did reality compare to your expectations of runninga cup cop. >> >> some runs were really good and otherruns we just lacked a little bit and couldn't really find that balance.>> that downhelp us, i think we were on the lead lap and learned a lot we can apply tothe fall race, both myself and the car, so just -- not the best day and came home onthe lead lap. nice to be back in martinsville
and the home track and i grew 45 minutes fromhere so it's neat to come here and have a fun race, but can't take the motorcraft quicklyenough for the fast forward fusion and real excited to race in texas next week.>> the wood brothers you saw there on the shirt, mentioned texas. he and chase wouldbe in the chase, chase elliott if we were to stop now given to where they are rightnow. let's talk about texas saturday night on fox.jimmie johnson has won the last three races there. it's a mile and a half.>> the last mile and a half race here in atlanta, georgia, jimmie johnson goes to victory lane.they are obviously strong on that program and look for them to be the real guy to beaton saturday night.
>> jimmie is the only driver slow far thisyear to have won two races. jimmie, kevin harvick, keselowski and kyle busch. only dennyhamlin has not won a sprint cup championships so four of the drivers with champions andare setting an early tone, if you're an a.j. allmendinger or rookie right to make yourmove, the guys who know how to win are stepping their best foot forward.>> they have experience and most of the experience is good experience and to be able to use thatand put people away. saw that in atlanta with jimmie johnson and seen some great finishesand today kyle busch outlasted the field. >> time was right for kyle busch on the shorttrack and a milestone accomplishment with his first victory here. for michael wall stripand our entire gang. i'm chris myers. thanks
for watching nascar on fs1. live, nhra racingfrom las vegas is straight ahead. thanks for being a part of racing on this sunday afternoon with us.
